computational thinking

...will be a fundamental skill used by everyone in the world by the middle of the 21st Century.

The new computing curriculum begins with the assertion that...

'
A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world'.
What is Computational thinking?

Put simply... it's a problem solving process that humans use to find solutions. We can then apply these solutions in a way that a computer, a human, or both, can understand.
Griditch is all about getting children to think computationally.

Here's how...
Picture
Create a problem.
First we need to think of a problem (challenge) that we can create for our opponent to solve.

I know, we'll create a path (algorithm) that connects the green man to his house.

Picture
Breakdown your problem.
We'll use the following grits:
  • Green man
  • Green house
  • x9 Wall
  • x5 Compass
To begin with, we'll place the green man and house in diagonally opposing corners.
Picture
Create your Algorithm.
Next we'll place five compass grits to create a path (algorithm) that connects the green man to his house.
Picture
Make sure all your grits are in the right place?...looks good.
Now we'll fill the remaining spaces with wall grits.
Picture
Provide clear instructions for your opponent.
Finally, we'll invert all our grits except for the green man and his house.

Your challenge is to find the path (algorithm) made up of 5 compass grits that connects the green man to his house.
Play the slide-show below to see how our opponent fared?

The thinking required to complete this challenge is fundamentally the same as the thinking required to complete the Hour of Code. That's why we encourage using code.org's excellent free tutorials to help aid the students understanding of computational thinking.
